First Non-Vegan Outing – Moxie’s

January 14, 2011

So today I was working in a different office. My company has several offices with the Greater Toronto Area. To prepare, this morning I packed my lunch. Some fruit, some nuts, and a bowl of chili. There is no guarantee of anything.

Naturally, lunch time comes around, and we are going out for lunch. Then I drop the V-bomb. No meat, no fish, no eggs, no cheese, no dairy. Hmmm….

We ended up at Moxies, which is a typical chain grillhouse. However, they boast vegetarian options.

I review, and their veggie things are foods with cheese, or foods that I don’t like.

The thing that interests me the most is their Spinach Salad with Champagne Strawberries, which comes with a grapefruit vinegarette, strawberries, oranges, and almonds. It is served on flatbread, covered with goat cheese.

When our waitress comes, I order a water to drink, and ask about this item. I ask for no cheese. Actually, I ask if it is pre-prepared (meaning the bread has been prepped) or is it something they do in kitchen upon order. In any event, NO CHEESE. I tell her that if the bread has cheese, then no bread. If not, then the bread plate with everything on top is fine.

For some reason, I didn’t want to get into the whole Vegan thing with our server, so when she asked if it is an allergy or I just don’t like it, I agreed that it was an allergy. I figure, what difference does it make? I don’t want it, make sure there is none on there.

As soon as I say that, she says that she needs to ask her manager, and he will come back. Okay, fine, whatever.

The manager comes over, and I was impressed. He tells me that they take allergies very seriously, and not to worry. He answers my questions, and then tells me that he will bring the food over. He also asks if it is a serious allergy (as in some people with nuts for example) or an uncomfortable one. I tell him not to worry, I won’t die in the restaurant.

When the meals are ready (my lunch companion also got a salad, which looked really good too), the manager brought over the food, and assured me again that it was dairy free.

That level of customer service alone makes me want to go back. Oh yeah, and the salad was good too!

Moxie’s at Square One in Mississauga – high recommendations! I wish I would have got the manager’s name. Kudos to him!

Best of all – I stayed true to the Vegan challenge!
